Watch this video. Excluding the Missouri Compromise, explain two causes of the Civil War from the video. Don't just name them, you need to name and then explain them. What made them a cause of the Civil War? What was the view of the two sides on each issue?

one cause was the fight over free and slave states. they said any land from Mexico, should have slaves. but the north didn't agree with them.
another one is the Kansas act. people was crossing boarders just to vote for slavery. the people in Kansas didn't want this at all. they were crossing boarders trying to make more slave states so they had a dispute about it. the north just wanted as many free states as slave states. the south only wanted slaves states.

The Kanas and Nebraska act caused the south to become angry because the north would have a higher count in the senate. Many violent acts started happen in Kanas because of people wanting and not wanting slaves.

Attacks in Kansas between the anti slavery and slavery fought each other.another cause of the civil war was that the southeners did not except anymore compermises

One of the causes of the Civil War was the fugitive slave laws. The people in the north did not agree with the law and did not enforce it. So the South was mad because the North wouldn't enforce it, and the North was mad because they didn't think they should have to enforce it. Another cause of the Civil War were the Nebraska and Kansas territories. The South didn't think it was fair because the North got more land (which meant more say in the government). The North was happy about them getting more land, but the South was very angry because they didn't think it was fair at all.

Two causes are, one, the argument of having slavery and not having slavery. Two, the fighting in Kansas. As you can see, this caused the war. The North was against slavery and the South was for slavery.

Stephanie, V said...

One cause of the civil war was the fugitive slave law. This law was a cause of the civil war because the law infuriated the northerners. The slaves or Americans could be fined and or imprisoned for helping a runaway slave. Another cause of the civil war was the Missouri compromise. This law was a cause of the civil war because some settlers wanted slavery and others didn't. Settlers that went from the south to west took their slaves. Settlers from the north didn't own slaves and thought slavery was wrong! This is how the civil war started.

One cause of the civil war was the fugitive slave act. This required people by law to capture escaped slaves and send them back to their owners. This infuriated northerners but southerners saw it as protecting heir rights. Another cause of the civil war was the attack on Kansas. This bloodshed eventually spread to congress when one senator who wrote a speech against slavey was attacked a week later by his distant cousin.

Two reason why I think the War happened was because John Brown and he defending of the blacks and killing 4 whites how agreed with slavery. Another reason was because the to disagreements between South and the North weather slave stays are not.One view which is the South "We want Slaves its nothing wrong with it". While on the other hand the north "slavery is wrong".

Jaylen Jones said...

The southern wanted a slave state, while northerner wanted a free state.
The southerners did not want both Kansas and Nebraska as free states since it will give northerner and the senate an advantage.John Brown killed 5 slave supporters as a result.

Adam Jennings said...

James Polk and press forward and aquired texas and it became a state in 1845. Support for taking over New Mexico and California grew. The Federal govt's actions led to war with Mexico. This was one of the causes for civil war. The U.S wanted more land and Mexico wanted control over Texas.
On may 1856 800 slaves rampaged into the town of Lawrence and burned things and destroyed newspaper offices. John Brown heard the attack and was outraged. He led 4 sons and other men on patowatami creek were they seized and killed 5 supporters of slavery. It was refered to as the civil war in Kansas. This led to Civil war because they had a civil war in Kansas due to slaves being outraged. The slaves wanted freedom and were outraged. The Americans wanted to catch the slaves and enslave them again.

Carly D. said...

One cause of the Civil war were differences between the North and the South. The South depended on cotton and slavery. The North was based more on industry. Another cause of the Civil war was the fight between slave and non-slave states. The Missouri compromise made a rule that slavery was prohibited in states former to the Louisiana Purchase except Missouri. There was then a fight in Kansas called "Bleeding Kansas" where Missourians tried to force it to be a slave state. Both of these problems caused the Civil War because people whenever theres a fight, people try to get revenge and with all these problems, it was going to lead to something huge.

first,to the union as a slave state, but would be balanced by the admission. second slavery was to be excluded from all new states in the louisiana purchase north of the sothern bounddary of missiour.

norris,jayda said...

2 causes of the Civil War was states versus federal right and another one is the election of Abraham Lincoln.
that had happend for the states versus federal right was the states wanted greated states right, and wat had happend was that south carolina believed that lincoln was an antislavery.

Jenna A. said...

One cause of the civil war in this video was the Missiouri compromise. Northerners did not like the idea of getting rid of the Missouri compromise with a bill to decide if California was going to be a free or slave state because it would then allow slavery in all of the states that had already been declared as free for over 30 years. But southerners liked the idea because it would allow them to try and make Mexican territory slave states too, and would allow them to have slavery in the north. Another cause of the civil war in this video was the house and congress were divided on this issue and rivial governments were then createdin Kansas, one for and one against slavery. They created there own constitutions, and asked to be heard, which created even more problems.

Philip S. said...

One cause of the Civil War is the bloodshed caused by the northerners and southerners. This was just the beginning of the Civil War because the northerners and southerners were actually taking each others lives. The north wanted the Kansas to be a free state but the south wanted Kansas to be a slave state.

Another cause of the Civil War is the northers were disobeying laws by helping the slaves into the free parts of the United States. The Fugitive Slave Law said that all Americans by law, we're required to help catch runaway slaves. It also said that you could be fined and/or imprisoned for helping a runaway slave. This law infuriated the northerners. Most northerners didn't even care about getting imprisoned and they still helped slaves through the Underground Railroad. Since the northerners were disobeying the laws, the southerners thought of taking action because they were losing property(slaves) .

Tyler King said...

One Of the causes of the civil war was the Wilmot Proviso ; it meant that slavery will be prohibited in all lands acquired from mexico.Another was when The Fugitive Slave Law was pass. That law meant that all Americans, wre required to help catch runaway slaves.

raivin webster said...

one of the effects was they arugerd over what state should be an slave state which caused some conflict between them and the people who aint want slaves mad there own law and this bulit on to the war. john brown believed god told him to end slavery. and he went on a rage and killed 5 supporters of slavery . and cause a war.

Darinda said...

The two causes of the Missouri Compromise, is one was the slavery state like which state should keep slaves and which state shouldnt allow slavery the south states like became the slave states like mississippi and alabama and missouri and arkansas annd flordia and texas states that didnt allow slave were new jersey and pennsylvaina and conneticut and massachusette and the second cause is Slavery disputes and trading rights
trading slaves were big in the south and trading slaves cost alot of money

Josh ziegler said...

One reason the civil war started was because the north and south could not agree on the hole slavery thing. Another reason is the southerners wanted to become there own country and the north did not want that to happen. The south really wanted slavery and wanted all states to be slave states. The north wanted free states and could not agree with the southerners on what states were slaves states and which we're not.

Carter G. said...

One cause of the civil war was the conflict about Kansas and nebraska whether or not those two states would be free or slave states. Another conflict that caused the civil war was the southerners coming to the north to capture slaves. The north tried to keep them out.

Conner F. said...

One of the problems was that kansas an several other states where voting weather or not to add slavery. So the people wanted for people to vote about it. The congress favored the pro slaves an the pro slaves wanted for kansas to be a slav state to give them an edge and the house supported the anti slaves. If kansas became a slave state or and free state then that would end up being a really big deal. THe other thing was that the south passed laws that wanted the northerners to send back run away slaves. The south wanted this because the people where losing alot of money for the run aways. The northerners didn't want this to happen and would even protect them from the southerners.

Jacob R. said...

Cause: representative david of Pennsylvania introduce a proposal of congress called willmit purvisal that slavery should be prohibited in any lands of mexico

Cause : Senator John C. Calhoun stated neither congress or either other government had authority to band slavery from a territory or regulate it

Effect: southerners protested furiously they wanted slavery for cal and Mexico

Effect: Neither of there proposal passed

Tony Hubbard said...

Tony Hubbard - One cause was economical and social differences between south and north, With Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin in 1793, cotton became very profitable. This machine was able to reduce the time it took to separate seeds from the cotton. However, at the same time the increase in the number of plantations willing to move from other crops to cotton meant the greater need for a large amount of cheap labor, i.e. slaves. Thus, the southern economy became a one crop economy, depending on cotton and therefore on slavery. On the other hand, the northern economy was based more on industry than agriculture. In fact, the northern industries were purchasing the raw cotton and turning it into finished goods. This disparity between the two set up a major difference in economic attitudes. The South was based on the plantation system while the North was focused on city life. This change in the North meant that society evolved as people of different cultures and classes had to work together. On the other hand, the South continued to hold onto an antiquated social order.
another cause was the growth of the abolition movement.

jason said...

causes 1 the Nebraska and Kansas territorys were above the 36 line but the south did not like this they would have been out voted in the laws. causes 2 when Preston was beat when he was talk about how bad it was to have slaves

Michael K. said...

The fugitive slave law helped cause the civil war because it made mounting anger the north. The south saw it as making the north recognize the south's rights. The north saw it as more evils of slavery.

In Kansas 800 slavery supporters attack the town of Lawrence this helped caused the civil war because the forces opposed to slavery retaliated.

Louis Girts said...

One cause was the Missouri comprise and when it got abolished it allowed territories that were free to have slaves. Another cause was slavery the north didn't want but the south did and there was much conflict between the north and south.

Jon.b said...

some southerners said that they would not be part of the united states

Some southerners attacked people who opposed slavery

dougles repealed the Missouri compromise That allowed southereners to have slaves upper north

Devin W. said...

One reason that contributed to the Civil War was that 800 slavery supporters attacked Lawrence, Kansas. They ransacked the town and burned down buildings. Keep in mind that Lawrence was the biggest anti slavery town there was. John Brown retaliated and led a group of men down a creek where the seized and killed 5 men. This just brought more fighting and it Kansas became known as bloody Kansas.

Another reason for the Civil War was violence in congress. Senator Charles Sumner repeatedly critisied slave supporters. Charles Sumner's cousin Preston brooks retaliated and later in the senators chamber injured his cousin with his cane. This Sumner Brooks incident and the Bleeding Kansas showed the rising hostility between the north and the south.

As America began to expand first with the lands gained from the louisiana purchase and later with the Mexican War the Missouri Compromise passed in 1820 made a rule that prohibited slavery in states from the former Louisiana Purchase the latitude 36 degrees 30 minutes north except in Missouri. During the Mexican War conflict started about what would happen with the new territories that the US expected to gain upon victory.David Wilmot proposed the Wilmot Proviso in 1846 which would ban slavery in the new lands. The Compromise of 1850 was created by Henry Clay and others to deal with the balance between slave and free states, northern and southern interests. Another issue that further increased tensions was the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.It created two new territories that would allow the states to use popular sovereignty to determine whether they would be free or slave.when Lincoln was elected in 1860, South Carolina issued its "Declaration of the Causes of Secession." They believed that Lincoln was anti-slavery and in favor of Northern interests. Before Lincoln was even president, seven states had seceded from the Union: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.

One of the causes of the Civil War was the angry debate that had caused the president Thomas Jefferson and the sectary to worry. It had been in the middle of the night when a fire bomb had went off and had alarmed everybody the debate was actually about a pre amble a title page to a great volume.Another cause of the Civil War were there were some slaves that they had allowed in the war but 11 of those states did not allow slaves to be in the war the senate with 2 members of each state. Had to be on each team to even it out but if there was another admission of a new state it would upset that balance. These are the 2 causes of the Civil War. The views of eaxh state were tat some did not want slaves and some did want slaves in the war.

2causes that happened in the civil war is that they were fighting against slavery and growth with the aubulation government .they wanted to stop slavery because it was not fair.

1. One cause of the civil war was when california bacame free state oregan and new Mexico would follow. The south didn't want that because they would be out numbered and out voted.

2. Another cause of it is when John brown took his sons and many other people and started a massacre. The south started to protest because he killed 5 slave supporters.

The civil war was started because congress wanted to make more states slave states but some people wanted to free the slaves. Then congress made the Kansas nebraska act because the people in Kansas and Nebraska wanted to free the slaves and when the laws were started the anti slave people started to protest and start there own elections. John brown wanted to stop slavery so he walked in the congress room and and beat his distance cousin and was hung for it. This is why the civil war was started between the north and the south

brownkyler said...

the cause was that the north had more land then the south and that when the slave run away and become free that people would come and get them or if an black an walk around up north like in ohio some people would catch them and take the to the south and become slave

FrankDC said...

The cause was the difference in slavery Maine didn't want slavery and Missouri did want slaves. The slave states didn't want the free states to have more states free. The free states didn't want the slave states to have more slave states. The states were trying to decide which side will Utah, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Kansas be in.

Malikb said...

The civil war was started by the Missouri compromise because Missouri wanted to keep slaves. But some people in Kansas and Nebraska wanted to free the slaves and some people wanted to keep them. There was a man name John brown and he wanted to free the slaves so him and some people killed 5 reporters who wanted to keep slavery. When some people heated that they where going to keep the slaves they started to protest and have there own election. This is why the civil war was started

Darius m said...

It started because of slevery one side wanted slave the other side did not Then because of having to search for slaves. They started the compromise because of state's to and the south wanted more land?

Preston meece said...

one of the main reasons of the civil war was over taxation in the econmy and the second reason was that some sates wanted to be slave state be they wouldnt let them be slave states

Jordan, Lanisha said...

1. Slavery
- Settlers from the south took their slaves. Settlers from the north didn't take in their slaves.
2. Fugitive Slave Law
- Anyone caught helping slaves escape will be punished.
They were the cause they had different beliefs about the slaves.
The north didn't want to have slaves. The south did want to have slaves.

richard t said...

the 2 civil war was about slaves states and free land.I believe in these things is because they wanted people to be free or working to help make more land.

William Q said...

The southern and northern both crossed the border of ks to make it what they wanted a free or a slave state

2nd cause was sumner was hit in the head with a can in the senate hall and couldn't return for several years

Johnathan n said...

One is state verses federal rights also the election of Abraham Lincoln

Anaiah W. said...

Two of the causes of the CivilWar were that there were economical differences between the North and South. Also there were state problems between some states being slave states and non slave states. There were different r
Laws of what was acceptable and what wasn't. There were also rules that slaves had to follow.

Cameron J. Bell 2 said...

1. Slavery - the South believe in slavery and the North are against slavery.

2. State's rights - North and South disagree about how powerful federal laws should be. South Carolina, a Confederate state, wanted to cancel a federal tariff that was hurting its economy. The Union wanted to keep the tariffs.

leistb said...

1 cause is the comprimise of 1850 witch said that california would be free and that new mexico and utah could choose

another law is that anyone helping slaves escape would be punished and if you found a runaway slave you had to return them to there owner and the north got angry

Marc Tamboer said...

One cause of the civil war was that all Americans where to take a slave if found back to there owner and couldn't help the slaves. This angered lots of the northern states. Also the slave supporters started attacking the anti slave people. This made people make a nick name for kansas called bloody Kansas. A government official was beaten with a Cane and stayed out of congress for years after. After that there was a man who was a fighter for the slaves. When he was on his way out of the jail to be executed a black woman stopped in front of him a child in her arms and he leaned down and kissed the child. He was a supporter for the blacks and to have anti slavery.

Hiep L. said...

One cause that started the Civil War are both Southerner and Northerner trying to turn Kansas, a new states into free/slave state. They start fighting and hundred of peoples died. The other cause that started the Civil War is they arguing about California, as well as the new Utal and New Mexico territory to be slave states or free states.

Marisa F said...

CAUSE 1- Viloence broke out between the North and the South. Some Southerners would get together to attack and kill people that protested against slavery. Even in Congress there were large disputes. Charles Sumner was attacked by Preston Brooks. Brooks beat him with a cane that gave him serious injuries. Sumner did to return to Congress for many years.

CAUSE 2- A Fugitive Slave Act was put into place. This act was to make every American capture runaway slaves. Even if they were from the North, the South wanted every person to capture slaves. Blacks in the North who weren't even slaves or runaway slaves were captured and taken into slavery.

Dj,Granville said...

Another cause was because of Ecinomic Differences between the north and the south. Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin in 1793 the cotton became profitable. the time it took to separate seeds from the cotton. But the north didn't focus on the they focused more on industry than agriculture .

Thomas Chhim said...

One cause of the civil war was when Kansas was in civil war. Two governments, anti slavery and pro slavery, fought against each other for control. This led to blood shed and arguments. Another reason was the fugitive slave act. It said if you saw a runaway slave you must return the slave to its master or be fined. Northerners were against it, but southeners encouraged it by wanted signs for rewards. Many people disliked the fugitive slave act.

Mason f said...

Cause 1- One of the causes was the sumner and brooks incedent. Preston Brooks came into the celler one day and beat sumner over the head and sholders with a cane.

Cause 2- The second cause was the bleeding in Kansas. 800 slavery supporters ransacked the town of Lawrence and destroyed buildings and other hotels. In reaction to tht Brown took 5 people and killed 5 slavery supporters.

Many people believe these were two reasons why the relationship between the north and south states escalated and was the cause of the civil war.

Myers, Justin said...

One way the civil war could have started was by southerners wanted slavery to be in California and other states aquierd by Mexico. Another reason the civil war could have been started was from bleeding Kansas. When fights broke out all over Kansas from people from Missouri came over and voted for slavery in Kansas.

Two causes of the civil war : The North and South both wanted the KS. Territory , and both sides claimed victory on the vote. Also the South was very unhappy with the NOrth having California . Putting the NOrth ahead of the South on the votes, in the representation.

Another cause was the Fugitive Slave Law, The south liked the idea, on the other hand , the north thought it was terrible. They both put out fliers (north saying to avoid the south ) and ( the south giving a reward for the slaves)

dj,martin said...

the first cause is that the northerners wanted a strong federal government and the southerners wanted the power to be chosen by the states and not the federal government.Another cause was that immigrants came and settled in the northern part of America and America gained more population, this made them have an advantage on the south by having more votes in congress.

Ian Unicker said...

They started out arguing about which states were free states and which states were slave states this affected the whole u.s and the people most angry was the slave owners

The south felt as if there rights were being taken away from them.

Two causes of the Civil War was the Kansas-Nebraska Act & Bleeding Nebraska. A violent event that came from these two events was the the caning of Republican Charles Sumner. The Kansas Nebrasaka Act totally replaced the Missouri Compromise since Nebraska and Kansas wanted to become states and they were free states. This would cause an uneven vote in the Senate for free vs. slave states. The Bleeding Kansas event was caused by John Brown when he believed that he was the one to end slavery, killing many slave owners in the process. As time went by, Congress got more and more seprated between slave and free states.

One cause of the civil war was because of slavery. Slavery was a very big issue in the North, and the North didn't want the slavery to spread anymore than it has. Another reason was the election of Abraham Lincoln. The south did not want Lincoln to be elected as president. If Lincoln was elected, some of the South states said they would no longer be a part of the U.S.A.
These reasons made people fight for what they thought was right. The North thought there should be no slavey, and said Lincoln should be president. The South wanted to keep slavery and did not want Lincoln to be president.

Riley B. said...

One cause of the civil war is, sectionalism. This is a cause because it further separated the country, making it seem like everyone around them, were no longer part of America. Some people were happy because of this, but some people were extremely un-happy and against it. Another cause of the civil war is all the violence. John Brown killed innocent people and freed slaves because he felt so strongly about slavery. There were often many fights with people about slavery. Others wanted to keep the peace, but some wanted to do what feels right, even if it had consequences.
