Realizing that America was too weak to become involved in Europe’s wars, President Washington adopted a position of neutrality, technically in violation of the 1778 agreement between the United States and France.

Having refused to ask Congress for a formal declaration of war against France, Adams pursued peaceful negotiations.  The Convention of Mortefontaine ended the Quasi-War and restored good relations between France and the United States.  In 1799 Adams openly broke with Hamilton.  The president sent another delegation to negotiate with France, and this delegation worked out an amicable settlement.  The war hysteria against France vanished, and the American people began to regard Hamilton’s army as a useless expense.  In avoiding war with France, Adams saved the nation from the schemes of the High Federalists.  In return, they made sure he lost the election of 1800.

One foreign problem the U.S faced in the early 1800's was the ''War of 1812''. The United States of America declared war with the British Empire for many reasons. One of the reasons are, when British and France were in a war, the British had trade restrictions on the United States. This was impressment.http://www.tngenweb.org/bedford/war1812.JPG

The Americans were doing good with making profit on shipment from china and other countries. Although the sea was dangerous becaus rod Barbary pirates, the U.S paid tribute money to be safe. Then Jefferson refused to pay tribute. The pirates got angry and started seizing ships. So now trading with forgien countries was becoming more difficult.

this link heped me understand the war between great britian more than what i did. and jefferson and Madison.During the early 1800's, the issues between the United States and Britain included: the impressment of American sailors (notably in the Chesapeake Affair), infringement on American trade rights, refusal to remove British soldiers from forts surrendered to the Americans at the end of the Revolutionary War, and British support of Indian raids on the American frontier.

These issues led to the American declaration of war on Britain in 1812 (War of 1812), which both nations believed was the other's fault and ended in a draw. At the end of the war, none of the issues which caused it were addressed in the peace treaty, but they declined anyways (mostly due to the end of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe). By the end of the 19th century, the British and Americans had grown closer and were no longer experiencing diplomatic problems.

One forgein issue that the U.S faced in the early 1800's was that the British were taking U.S men to serve in their navy. This was also known as "impressment". Another problem with the British was that they tried to stop american trade with the French by blocking all of the ports in New York and no american trade ship could leave without being serched.

Riley B. said...

Some problems that the U.S. faced in the early 1800s are, Because a constitutional amendment authorizing the acquisition would take too long, and because Napoleon wanted the deal finalized quickly, Jefferson held the issue to a vote. Americans voted quickly in favor of purchasing the Louisiana Territory. Another example is In 1806 Congress passed an act adopting non-importation of certain goods from Great Britain as retaliation for Great Britain’s interference with American neutral rights. Great Britain in turn proclaimed a blockade from the Elbe River to Brest.

Britain had been at war with France. President Jefferson did not want to get involed in any war. For many years, Britain had been taking men by force and placing them in the British navy. Because of the war, Britain wanted to stop the trade of French products to the U.S. They blocked the port in New York for all of 1805. In the French Revolution, France and Britain went to war. This happened in 1789. by 1793, it had become bloody. Washington proclaimed neutrality on April 1793.

In 1785 the American ship Empress of China returned to New York from China with high price cargo of tea and silk. Soon, they trade more often. Also, they had to watch out for pirates along the sea. They started a war with the Tripoli. They cut down the United State's pole of the American consulate. This started the war.The pirates were with the Tripoli. Even when the war ended, the U.S. still had to pay 60,000 dollars for the release of the American prisoners.

A foreign problem faced by the united states in the 1800's was pirates off the Barbary coast from tripoli and later on Algiers. The pirates seized American ships and would take bribes from other countries called tribute. This eventually led to war with North Africa in the very early 1800's. When the war ended in 1805 piracy became less of a problem until 1815.

The Louisiana Purchase, in 1803 opened vast Western expanses of fertile land, that exactly met the needs of the rapidly expanding population of yeomen farmers whom Jefferson championed. Despite incompetent government management, and a series of defeats early on, Americans found new generals like Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, and Winfield Scott, who repulsed British invasions and broke the alliance between the British and the Indians that held up settlement of the Old Northwest. The Federalists, who had opposed the war to the point of trading with the enemy and threatening secession, were devastated by the triumphant ending of the war

Americans and new immigrants lived in awful conditions. Some slept and labored in rooms with over 15 people. The slums and tenements they lived in were often dangerous and unsanitary. Even with the help of state laws, "ordinary blocks contained 10 such tenements and housed as many as 4,000 people. The airshafts became giant silos for trash. The poor living conditions often contributed to an increase of disease as well. Disease "in the 1870s killed tens of thousands...Almost a quarter of children born in American cities in 1890 never lived to see their first birthday" (Davidson 276).

The Barbary Pirates, who had been a threat off the coast of Africa for centuries, encountered a new enemy in the early 19th century: the young United States Navy.

The North African pirates had actually been an established menace for so long that most nations, by the late 1700s, were paying tribute to ensure that merchant shipping could proceed without being violently attacked.

In the early years of the 19th century, the United States, at the direction of President Thomas Jefferson, decided to call a halt to the payment of tribute. And a war between the young US Navy and the Barbary pirates ensued.

Ten years later, a second war settled the issue of American ships being attacked by pirates. The issue of piracy off the African coast seemed settled for two centuries until it recently resurfaced with Somali pirates, who once again faced the US Navy.
