LOUISIANA PURCHASE. A watershed event in American history, the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803 nearly doubled the land mass of the young nation: for a purchase price of $15 million, the United States increased its size by some 828,000 square miles. The region included the Mississippi River and its tributaries westward to the Rocky Mountains, and extended from the Gulf of Mexico at New Orleans up the Red River to the Canadian border.

The U.S. paid 60 million francs ($11,250,000) plus cancellation of debts worth 18 million francs ($3,750,000), for a total sum of 15 million dollars (less than 3 cents per acre) for the Louisiana territory ($219 million in 2011 dollars, less than 42 cents per acre).

Lousiainna purchase was a deal between the United States and France and the amount of land.
It doubled the land of the United States causing it to increase size and and strengthen the nation.
And it provided impetus to expand westward. what I learned help me understand and view the Louisianna purchase more clearly and what the trade was about and why it was so important to people back then and what they fought over was a great deal.

Spain and France signed a secret treaty when Spain gave up New Orleans to the French. This was a threat to America. Jefferson knew if he didn't buy the land from France, they would go into war. Jefferson sent envoy's to France trying to purchase this land. Instead, they returned with an agreement to buy the entire Lousiana Purchase. America didn't have enough money to buy he land so they borrowed from Great Britain with a 6% interest. http://americanhistory.about.com/od/thomasjefferson/a/tj_lapurchase.htm

Ashland-In 1762, France had ceded Louisiana to Spain, but by the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso (1800) the French had regained the area. Napoleon Bonaparte (the future Emperor Napoleon I) envisioned a great French empire in the New World, and he hoped to use the Mississippi Valley as a food and trade center to supply the island of Hispaniola, which was to be the heart of this empire.
