The Louisiana Purchase was purchased on April 30, 1803 and was purchased from the nation of France as a treaty. The land was 828,000 square miles and was west of the Mississippi. Thomas Jefferson bought the land and more than doubled the size of the United States. It was sold for less than five cents per acre, which equaled out to about $15 million. It went from the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains. It helped pioneers travel farther and settle in more land. Also the Government was able to see what else they purchased and they sent people out there to see what other kind of land our nation has provided.
