The first foreign episode involved Jefferson's war with the Barbary pirates. For the previous century or so, Western nations had paid bribes to the Barbary states, which would later become Morocco, Algeria, Tunis, and Tripolitania, to keep them from harassing American and merchant ships. When the Pasha of Tripoli raised his demands in 1801, Jefferson refused to pay the increase, sent warships to the Mediterranean, blockaded the small nation, and tried unsuccessfully to promote a palace coup in Tripoli.

One of the foreign countries that the United States had problems with during Thomas Jefferson's time, was Great Britain. The problem is, while Britain and Europe were fighting, the United States was sending them supplies. The British navy stated seizing the American ship that were carrying supplies, and forcing the American sailors into the Royal Navy.

Another country that the U.S had problems with is what is now Morocco, Algeria, Tunis, and Tripolitania; at the time they were known as the Barbary states. For the previous century, Western nations paid money to the Barbary states to keep them from bothering American ships. Although, the Pasha of Tripoli demanded to be paid more, and, of course, Jefferson refused.

The countries that caused problems for the new America was Tripoli ( now capital of Libya) and other places in North Africa, also foreign countries in war, had somewhat of a problem with the united states. The United States had problems with Tripoli because we were doing fine, but then they raised their prices and Thomas Jefferson said that they should stop the practice of bribe payments. So he sent over a fleet of US navy ships, but pirates took them by surprise. The US was trading with other places and when they were in war, the US wanted to be neutral, but got caught in the middle because they thought the US was on their side but they were just trying to be neutral.

The first foreign episode involved Jefferson's war with the Barbary pirates. When the Pasha of Tripoli raised his demands in 1801, Jefferson refused to pay the increase, sent warships to the Mediterranean, blocked the small nation, and tried unsuccessfully to promote a palace in Tripoli. When fighting between France and England got intense, Jefferson tried to craft a foreign policy that allowed the United States to trade with both belligerents without taking sides in their war. That was impossible, given that both sides considered trade with the other a defacto act of war.

Some foreign countries that caused problems for the U.S is France and the Berber countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. The problem with France was that we bought the Louisiana Purchase causing us to go deeper in debt. President Jefferson force us to go to war with the Berber countries (North Africa). This caused a lot of soldiers lost and this put us in debt as well when Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase.

England and France caused problems for America. After U.S bought the Louisiana Purchase France and Enlgand went to war. England kept stopping U.S. ships and taking the sailors off and making them fight in the war. So he passed the Embargo Act. The Embargo Act was where American ships were not aloud to go to forigen ports. And other foreign countries were not aloud to go to their ports eithe. It did not stop the war but it hurt the business of merchants in the Northeast. It caused unemployment to rise, as sailors, ship builders and other workers lost their jobs. The loss of foreign markets for crops hurt farmers, too. The Embargo Act was ended in 1809, the same year Jefferson left office

One of the foreign affairs that caused problems with Thomas Jefferson was the war with the Barbary pirates. American merchant ships were repeatedly harassed by this pirates. The conflict between the two was settled through a agreement of one last payment to Tripoli. Also, the American ships had multiple encounters with the British navy. Jefferson then suspended oversea trade with the European settlements. The Embargo Act was replaced by the Non-Intercourse Act, enabling trade with everyone but England and France. The American and English dispute occured due to this event, being under the administration of James Madison.
