People had to vote for the President and Vice President separately. Before the 12th amendment was confirmed, the person with the most votes was President and the person who came in second came was Vice President. It was necessary so no one would have to fight after the President would've picked the Vice President. Someone might have thought that the President was going to pick them.

The 12th amendment say that the Electors will meet in their states, and vote for the President and Vice President. This was needed because it changed the prohibition that kept the electors from voting for two "favorite sons" of their state. It allowed each elector to vote for who they believe would make the best president and vice president.

Also, the 12th amendment says that electoral college votes help elect the president, electoral votes are made up representatives from each state.

The Twelfth Amendment changed the way we elected our presidents and vice presidents. After the twelfth Amendment, separate ballots are used for presidents and vice presidents. Also, the candidate with the larger number of votes will be elected, and the vice president MUST meet the same constitutional requirements as provided for the president.

Everyone knows that Americans vote for the President every four years, but did you know that the Electoral College that actually elects the President? The Electoral College is made up of representatives from each state and Washington DC and the biggest states will have more representatives, which we call “electors.” These electors will give all of their votes to the Presidential candidate that wins the popular vote in each state. The popular vote is to total number of people that vote for each candidate. If this system seems strange to you, then you would be correct, the Electoral College is unique to the United States

The twelfth Amendment provides the procedure for electing the President ad Vice President. It replaced article II Section 1, Clause 3, which provided the original procedure by which the Electoral College functioned. This procedure put president and vice president into one team. So, if you vote for the president you vote for the president's vice president as well. The original procedure chose president and vice president based on popularity votes. Whoever got the majority votes received the title of president and the one with the second most votes got vice presidency. This was a problem, because if the two leaders were of different parties then almost nothing would get done, because they wouldn't agree on anything like issues, creating laws, or even legalizing and illegalizing things . Also, if the president dies the vice president might change all of the laws the dead president first made.
